Town of Madoc loses power from a fallen tree

Many Madoc residents lost power last Friday around 7 p.m. on May 29th.

A large tree has fallen across the road, causing a hydro pole to break and snapping connected power lines. Snapped power lines lay across St Lawrence Street West and Wellington Street, as well as across peoples’ properties.

Residents in the area were quick to call 9-1-1 and were ready to help direct traffic away from the danger the fallen lines and the tree were causing, as some locals were able to see sparks after the incident.

“It’s best to have an emergency plan, you never know how long you are going to be out of power for,” Derek Snider, the Centre Hastings Fire Chief and a Madoc local, has stated.

Snider was the first one to arrive at the scene, while he was off duty, around 7:15 p.m. and had radioed in the incident while observing the scene, while a member of the Ontario Provincial Police arrived to help direct traffic and shut down the connected roads.

“Call 9-1-1 for sure, we will arrive,” Snider informed.

At this time, it is unknown how long power will be out in the surrounding affected area. Residents and locals are advised to stay safely away from the snapped power lines while emergency responders and Hydro One are cleaning up the scene, and while repairs are being made.

A warm thank you goes out to the members of the Centre Hastings Fire Department and the Madoc Ontario Provincial Police for their quick action to keep residents safe.
