Air Quality Advisory in Effect for Southern Ontario

Issued: Thursday, June 5, 2025 | Region: Belleville and surrounding communities

A Special Air Quality Statement is in effect across much of Southern Ontario, including Belleville, due to smoke from ongoing wildfires. The advisory was issued by Environment Canada and remains active from Thursday, June 5 at 3:36 PM EDT through to Friday, June 6 at 7:36 AM EDT.

What to Expect

Wildfire smoke is expected to linger across the region tonight into Friday morning, resulting in poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Health and Safety Tips

As smoke levels rise, so do the health risks. People may experience:

Irritated eyes, nose, or throat

Headaches

Mild or severe coughing

Chest discomfort or breathing difficulties

Those most at risk include:

Seniors (65+)

Pregnant individuals

Infants and children

People with chronic illnesses or breathing issues

Outdoor workers and athletes

If you find yourself getting smoked out or having a hard time breathing it may be best to limit your time outdoors as much as possible. Consider rescheduling any sports, events, or outdoor activities. If symptoms become severe, seek medical attention immediately.

How to Protect Yourself If Needed

Keep windows and doors closed

Use a high-quality air filter or certified air purifier indoors

Stay cool and hydrated, especially during warm temperatures

If you need to go outside, wear a properly fitted N95 mask to reduce smoke particle exposure

Be a Good Neighbour

Check in on elderly relatives, vulnerable neighbours, and those who may need extra help during the advisory.
