A bold attempted theft in Belleville quickly escalated into a chaotic scene on Sunday, leaving multiple vehicles damaged and a suspect in custody thanks to the actions of nearby witnesses.

On April 5th at approximately 2:41 p.m., members of the Belleville Police Service responded to a business located along Old Highway 2 following reports of an attempted theft involving a recreational vehicle. According to police, an unknown male attempted to steal an RV from the property before being confronted by witnesses who intervened.

As the situation unfolded, the suspect fled the scene in a truck, striking three separate vehicles and causing damage to both the vehicles and the RV during the escape. The vehicle continued a short distance before ultimately colliding with a pole. The driver then fled on foot but was quickly pursued and detained by witnesses until officers arrived.

Police took the individual into custody without further incident.

As a result of the investigation, Jason Fleury, 43, of Hamilton, has been charged with:

  • Robbery with violence

  • Dangerous operation

  • Fail to comply with a probation order

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in June.

Thank you to the witnesses who stood up for what's right. Running a small business is never easy, but serving great people like all of you makes it worth it.
