Belleville Police Warn of Scam Exploiting Local Contractors’ Kindness

ree

The Belleville Police Service is warning the community about a scam that has been targeting local contractors, preying on their goodwill and willingness to help others.

In recent reports, contractors have received emails from individuals claiming to be hospitalized and in urgent need of work to be completed while they are unable to be home.

The message sounds genuine, often polite and sometimes even desperate, and asks the contractor to meet with a moving company to gain access to the property.

The scammer offers to pay by credit card but asks that an extra amount be added to the charge.

The contractor is then told to forward those extra funds to the movers, who supposedly cannot accept credit card payments. After the transaction goes through, the payment turns out to be fraudulent, leaving the contractor responsible for the full loss.

Police say this type of scam is particularly concerning because it targets the trust and compassion of people who are simply trying to do their job and help someone in need.

Police Advice

Residents and business owners are urged to be cautious with any request involving the transfer of money or processing payments for others.

  • Never forward funds on behalf of someone you do not know.

  • Do not process payments from unverified sources.

  • If something feels off, trust your instincts and confirm through official channels before taking action.

Anyone who believes they have been contacted or victimized by this scam is encouraged to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
