Concerned Citizen’s Call Leads to Impaired Driving Charge in Prince Edward County

A late-night traffic complaint from a concerned resident has resulted in impaired driving charges following a police response in Prince Edward County.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police, officers with the Prince Edward County Detachment received a report around 10:45 p.m. on Friday, March 27th, 2026, regarding a vehicle allegedly being driven in a dangerous manner. Police were able to locate the vehicle shortly after and initiated an investigation.
An Approved Screening Device was utilized at the scene, which led to the arrest of the driver. The individual was then transported to the detachment for further testing.
As a result of the investigation, Dwayne Benway, 67, of Prince Edward County, has been charged with:
Operation while impaired, alcohol
Operation while impaired, blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on May 6, 2026.
In addition to the charges, the individual’s driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days.
Police are reminding the public that impaired driving remains a serious and preventable risk on local roads.
Anyone who suspects a driver may be impaired by alcohol or drugs is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately. That call could help prevent a collision and save a life.
