Belleville, ON – A local shopper is warning others to check their cash carefully after unknowingly receiving counterfeit bills at Food Basics in Bayview Mall.
The incident occurred around 4:40 PM at cash register #1 (customer service) when the individual was handed $25 in fake bills as change. The counterfeit money went unnoticed until they attempted to pay at a gas station later in the evening, where the cashier pointed out the bills were fake.
Upon closer inspection, the fake $5 and $20 bills were missing key security features:
$5 Bill: Lacked the Mackenzie Tower in the clear section.
$20 Bill: Did not have the Peace Tower in the transparent area.
The individual plans to return to Food Basics to report the issue but is unsure if anything can be done. Additionally, comments on the original post suggest that a similar incident may have occurred at the YMCA in Belleville, raising concerns that counterfeit cash is circulating in multiple locations.
This serves as an important reminder for Belleville residents to double-check their cash when receiving change, especially with smaller denominations that are commonly counterfeited.
If you suspect you have received counterfeit currency, report it to the Belleville Police Service and notify the business where you received it.
