Highway 401 Closed Near Port Hope Following Collision

Update: At 4:11pm, traffic is flowing again and the road has reopened. Reports indicate a tire detached from an eastbound vehicle and hit a westbound vehicle, causing the collision.
All westbound lanes of Highway 401 have been closed following a collision near Wesleyville Road and the Port Hope ONroute service centre.
The incident marks the second reported collision affecting Highway 401 in the area today, creating further concerns and significant delays for motorists travelling through Northumberland County.
Traffic is backed up for several kilometres, with congestion also developing along nearby roads as drivers attempt to avoid the closure. Ontario 511 is reporting a westbound Highway 401 collision in the Newtonville area with all lanes closed.
Drivers travelling west toward Newtonville, Newcastle, Bowmanville and the Greater Toronto Area should expect major delays and consider leaving Highway 401 well before reaching the closure.
Emergency crews are at the scene. No confirmed information has been released regarding the number of vehicles involved or whether anyone has been injured.
Motorists approaching stopped traffic should reduce their speed, remain alert and leave room for emergency vehicles. Drivers must not use the highway shoulder to bypass the closure.
