The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are making an urgent appeal to the public for witnesses and dashcam footage following a serious collision on Highway 401 eastbound in the Municipality of Port Hope that left one person with life-threatening injuries.
Emergency crews, including police, paramedics and firefighters, responded to the two-vehicle collision at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30th, near the Highway 401 eastbound On Route/Service Centre.
According to investigators, one of the vehicles involved was parked on the highway shoulder when its driver exited the vehicle. During the incident, the parked vehicle was struck by another vehicle, and the individual who had exited the vehicle was also hit.
The injured person was transported to a local hospital before being airlifted by Ornge air ambulance to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. Police say no other individuals involved suffered serious injuries.
The collision prompted the closure of Highway 401 eastbound at Newtownville for several hours while members of the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team assisted with the investigation. All lanes reopened at approximately 3:30 p.m.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have been travelling through the area with a dashcam around the time of the incident to come forward.
Even information that may seem insignificant could prove critical in helping investigators determine exactly what happened.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Peterborough Northumberland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online through stopcrimehere.ca
Police are particularly interested in hearing from motorists who were travelling on Highway 401 eastbound near the Port Hope service centre shortly before or after 11 a.m. on May 30th. It is possible they may have captured the incident or the moments leading up to it on dashcam video.
The investigation is ongoing, and further information will be provided as updates become available.
