The Peterborough County OPP are warning residents to stay alert following a recent fraud case involving a scammer posing as a representative from the Equifax Fraud Department.
Police say the victim reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming their bank accounts had been compromised. The caller instructed the victim to cut up their debit cards, place them in a box outside their residence for collection, and provide a photo of their identification.
A cell phone was later delivered to the victim’s home to assist with sending the requested image. After complying, the victim discovered multiple fraudulent transactions had occurred in their bank accounts.
The OPP reminds the public that Equifax will never directly contact individuals about potential breaches or ask for personal information. If an account has been compromised, the notification will always come from your financial institution.
Equifax does not initiate unsolicited phone calls, text messages, or deliveries requesting private or banking details. These are common tactics used by scammers to build trust and gain access to sensitive information.
Residents are urged to remain cautious and never share personal or financial information based on a phone call alone.
If you believe you’ve been targeted or victimized by a scam, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
More information on how to recognize and protect yourself from scams is available at www.ontario.ca/page/identify-scam-or-fraud.
The OPP also encourages anyone with knowledge of unlawful activity to report it anonymously through Crime Stoppers at stopcrimehere.ca or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
