A Special Weather Statement has been issued for much of Eastern Ontario, advising residents to prepare for a period of strong southwest winds expected to gust between 80 and 90 km/h.
These winds are forecasted to begin late Wednesday afternoon and continue into Thursday afternoon, with the strongest gusts anticipated overnight Wednesday into early Thursday.
What to Expect
Alongside the strong winds, there is also a chance of rain and/or wet snow Wednesday afternoon. When paired with gusts up to 90 km/h, roads may become slippery, visibility may decrease, and travel conditions could worsen quickly.
Environment Canada notes the following possible impacts:
Scattered power outages may occur due to falling branches or airborne debris.
Loose outdoor items such as bins, decorations, signage, and lightweight furniture may be tossed around or blown into traffic.
Drivers of high-profile vehicles; including transport trucks, delivery vans, cube trucks, RVs, and tall or lifted pickup trucks should use extra caution when driving, as these vehicles can catch the wind more easily and may be pushed or swayed by sudden gusts, especially on highways, bridges, and open rural stretches.
The Special Weather Statement is in effect for:
Belleville
Cobourg
Colborne
Consecon
Eastern Northumberland County
Frontenac Islands
Kingston
Napanee
Odessa
Quinte West
Western Northumberland County
