Wildfires, Extreme Heat and Smoke Continue to Impact Ontario as Fire Danger Remains High

Much of Ontario is facing severe conditions on Tuesday due to widespread wildfires, extreme heat, and heavy smoke that continue to affect the province.
Smoke is expected to worsen overnight and throughout Wednesday, lingering into Wednesday night, with the greatest health risks for older adults, young children and those with respiratory or heart conditions.
According to the latest national wildfire update, approximately 796 wildfires are currently active across Canada, with 60 classified as out of control. So far this season, more than 3,100 wildfires have burned approximately 1.4 million hectares of land nationwide.
Within Ontario, officials are responding to approximately 160 active wildland fires as of Tuesday, with the majority located in the province's Northwest Region. More than 120 of those fires are burning in northwestern Ontario alone, and dozens remain out of control. Several northern communities remain under evacuation orders as firefighters continue working to contain rapidly growing fires.
Smoke Affecting Much of Ontario
Smoke from the northern wildfires has spread hundreds of kilometres, creating hazy skies and reducing air quality throughout much of Ontario, including many communities in central and eastern parts of the province. Environment and health officials are advising residents to prepare for deteriorating air quality through Wednesday and Wednesday night, with smoke levels expected to fluctuate depending on local wind conditions.
Those experiencing coughing, difficulty breathing, chest discomfort or eye irritation are encouraged to move indoors, keep windows and doors closed where possible, and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe.
Heat Increasing Fire Risk
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued heat warnings for large portions of Ontario Tuesday, with daytime temperatures climbing into the 30-degree range and humidex values approaching or exceeding 40 in many areas.
The prolonged hot, dry weather is rapidly drying forests, grasslands and vegetation, allowing fires to ignite more easily and spread faster once they start. Combined with shifting winds, these conditions continue to make firefighting efforts increasingly difficult.
Electrical Transformers Under Increased Stress
With temperatures soaring across Ontario, electrical transformers are working harder than usual to meet increased power demand. Combined with prolonged exposure to extreme heat, transformers can become more susceptible to overheating—particularly if equipment is aging, overloaded or has developed a fault.
In some cases, an overheated transformer can fail, causing localized power outages, electrical fires or damage to nearby infrastructure. While there is no indication that transformer failures are responsible for the major wildfires currently burning across northern Ontario, the current weather conditions increase the likelihood of isolated transformer failures. Residents are encouraged to report any sparking, smoking or damaged electrical equipment to their local utility and to stay well away from downed power lines.
Stay Prepared
With hot weather and deteriorating air quality expected to continue into Wednesday night, officials are reminding Ontarians to avoid unnecessary outdoor burning, properly extinguish smoking materials, comply with all local fire restrictions and remain alert for changing conditions.
Wildfire activity can change rapidly depending on weather, wind and humidity. Residents are encouraged to monitor official wildfire updates, weather alerts and local emergency notifications, particularly if travelling through northern Ontario or areas experiencing reduced air quality.
Emergency officials continue to remind the public that everyone has a role to play in preventing new fires during periods of extreme heat. Even a small spark can quickly develop into a significant wildfire under the current conditions.
