Worsening Snowfall and Cold Create Hazardous Travel Conditions Tonight

Updated: Dec 26, 2025

Update Issued at 8:20pm Environment Canada is now calling for 10 to 15cm but more may be possible

An initial weather statement issued earlier by Environment Canada called for approximately 8 to 10 centimetres of snowfall through the duration of the system, with conditions expected to ease overnight.

That forecast has now already been surpassed.

In the first four hours alone, snowfall totals in parts of the region have already reached the full 8 to 10 centimetre range, signalling that this system is stronger and more persistent than originally anticipated.

As snow continues to fall steadily this evening, gusty winds are creating widespread blowing snow, leading to frequent and sudden whiteout conditions, particularly on open stretches of highway, rural roads, and exposed areas. Visibility may drop to near zero at times, often with little warning, making travel extremely dangerous.

Road conditions are deteriorating rapidly, with snow-covered and slippery surfaces becoming widespread. Cold temperatures and falling wind chill values are further compounding the risk, especially for anyone travelling long distances or dealing with a breakdown or delay.

What This Means for Travellers

  • Whiteout conditions may develop suddenly, reducing visibility to near zero

  • Roads may become snow-covered faster than plows can respond

  • Travel times will increase, and conditions may change quickly

  • Cold exposure becomes a serious risk if travel is delayed

Travel Advice

Motorists are strongly urged to avoid non-essential travel tonight.

Those who must be on the roads should reduce speed significantly, maintain extra following distance, and be prepared to pull over safely if visibility drops suddenly.

Carrying winter emergency supplies is highly recommended.

Conditions will continue to be monitored, and further updates will be issued if snowfall intensifies or additional advisories are announced.

Stay safe, spread the word and plan accordingly.
