On Wednesday, February 25th, the power went out for many residents as a hydro pole caught fire. The fire took place on Highway 62, just north of Madoc. The highway was closed at both sides of Simpson Road, as members of the fire department directed traffic north and southbound along Simpson Road.
Madoc Township Fire Department and Hydro One were quick to the scene as a transformer bracket bled into the pole, causing a fire to spark.
Brayden Jones, a resident in the Madoc Township resident and fire fighter, was seen in the swamp just off to the side of the highway, with the hose spraying along the pole to extinguish the fire. The snow was waist-deep on Jones as he was seen being pulled out of the swamp by the rest of his team after the fire was extinguished.
“There’s porcelain on them, charging them, right? It was starting to feed electricity into the pole,” Jones stated.
Hydro One members replaced the bracket and cross arm for the night while they await for a new hydro pole to replace it, ensuring that residents will have power back and that it will be safe while they wait.
Emcon was called to put salt down along the highway where water was sprayed to help with the freezing conditions on the road. The scene was cleared around 9:10 p.m. when given the all clear.
Residents lost power around 7:50 p.m. and it was back on by 9:20 p.m. that same evening. Hydro One plans on returning to the scene on either Thursday or Friday to replace the hydro pole.
Let's Give a Huge Thanks to our Hydro One Workers!
