Engines roared across Stoco Lake on Friday, Aug. 22, as the Ontario Watercross Racing Association launched its Ski-Doo oval track races at Trudeau Park in Tweed.
Trudeau Park has hosted the event for the past few years, leading up to the annual Tweed Stampede over the Labour Day weekend.
Registration closed on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7:30p.m., with an entry fee of $25 per racer.
Practice began at 1p.m. and ran until 5p.m on Friday, giving the riders time to prepare their equipment ahead of time for the races on Saturday, Aug. 23.
“This is my first year racing,” said Lucas Greenwood, another Hastings County resident stated “This is my second race. My cousin races, and my family got me into it.”
The Ontario Watercross Racing Association announced the race on Facebook and its site on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, with the registration opening on Monday, Aug. 11 2025.
Sea-Doo races bring the community together, with both new and returning competitors taking part. Many racers said they were feeling hopeful about their chances and were looking forward to enjoying their time at Trudeau Park, whether they were staying in campers or in the lodge.
“I went out to practice, and it went really well. We are going to see what happens, but I am pretty hopeful,” Greenwood said.
The races were divided into seven classes: amateurs, women’s, semi-pro 600, pro 600, semi-pro 800, pro 800 and masters. The master’s class is the newest addition, introduced in the summer of 2023 as a fun “gentlemen’s race”. It allows anyone 45 years old and older to compete in a friendly race without racing against the younger entrants.
With the season’s final races set for Sept. 27 and Sept. 28, the association is gearing up for one last burst of speed before the flag drops on the 2025 season.
