BC Hydro reports that their first generating unit is currently active and generating electricity for the BC Provincial Power Grid. The next steps are to implement the next five generating units. The project is projected to be complete by fall 2025.
At long last, on Monday, October 28th, BC Hydro’s Site C Dam began generating power for BC’s Provincial Power Grid. BC Hydro reported on Monday that they activated the first of six generating units after a short testing and commissioning period. This first unit will provide 180 megawatts of electricity for the province. Once completed with all six generating units, the Site C Dam is estimated to generate a total of 1,100 megawatts of electricity. That equates to about 5,100 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, which adds 8% to British Columbia’s power supply.
This generator, while seeming small, marks a substantial piece in an almost century-longstanding project. The Site C Dam was proposed nearly 70 years ago in the 1980s, but the start of the project was delayed until the liberal government picked up the project in 2010.
The project has also accumulated a large cost for the duration of its construction, costing the province nearly 16 billion dollars. After the massive amounts of time and money spent on the Site C Dam, BC Hydro reports that the project is nearing its completion and should be finished by fall 2025. Currently, the Site C Dam reservoir is 90% full, and water levels have risen 40 meters (131 feet) since late August. The next step for BC Hydro is to test and begin the commission work for the second generator, which the company reports is in progress.
The company continues to urge people away from the site for the next year due to unstable slopes and floating hazardous debris in the nearby water.
