- Tick Season in Eastern Ontario: What You Need to Know
By Small Town News | A Division of Small Town Productions As summer unfolds across Eastern Ontario, so too does the active season for blacklegged ticks, the primary carriers of Lyme disease and other emerging illnesses like anaplasmosis. While health officials are reporting increased tick activity this year, the focus remains on awareness and prevention, not panic. So far in 2025, there have been 186 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in the region spanning from Prince Edward County to the Quebec border, including Ottawa, Belleville, Kingston, and surrounding communities. The South East Health Unit, which covers areas like Smiths Falls, Brockville, and Prince Edward County, has recorded the highest case count in Ontario. For more local information and updates, visit the South East Health Unit Lyme Disease page . But health experts stress that ticks are a manageable risk, and simple precautions can go a long way in protecting yourself and your family. “We have to assume that all ticks could potentially pass on Lyme disease,” said Dr. Trevor Arnason, Ottawa’s acting medical officer of health. “But with the right precautions, most people can continue enjoying outdoor activities safely.” How to Protect Yourself Whether you're hiking, walking the dog, or working in the garden, here are some key ways to reduce your risk of tick bites: Wear long sleeves and pants. Tuck pant legs into socks to prevent ticks from crawling underneath clothing. Use insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin on exposed skin and clothing. Stick to the trail. Avoid tall grass and leaf litter where ticks tend to wait for hosts. Do full-body tick checks after spending time outdoors, especially around the knees, underarms, hairline, and waistband. Shower within two hours of coming indoors to help wash off unattached ticks. Special Considerations for Children and Pets Young children and pets are especially vulnerable to tick bites because they’re closer to the ground and less likely to notice a tick has attached. 🧒 For infants and kids: Dress them in light-coloured clothing to spot ticks more easily. Use child-safe insect repellents as directed (DEET is safe for children over 6 months). Check their scalp, ears, behind knees, groin, and under arms thoroughly after outdoor play. 🐾 For pets: Talk to your vet about monthly tick prevention medications (oral or topical). Check pets daily after walks, especially around the ears, neck, legs, belly, and between toes. Avoid letting pets roam through long grass or wooded areas unprotected. What to Do If You Find a Tick If you discover a tick attached to your skin: 1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp it as close to the skin as possible. 2. Pull upward slowly and steadily, avoid twisting or squeezing, which could cause the tick’s head or mouthparts to break off. 3. After removal, clean the area and your hands with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or an iodine scrub. If part of the tick stays embedded: Don’t dig into your skin. Try removing visible parts gently with tweezers. A visit with your local hospital would be the best step incase of infection or potential Lyme Disease Watch for signs of infection like redness, swelling, or pus. In order to accurately test for an keep track of Lyme Disease in our area residents are encouraged to seal the tick in a plastic bag or container, note the date, and contact a healthcare provider or pharmacist. In Ontario, pharmacists are now authorized to assess tick bites and prescribe a single dose of antibiotics to prevent Lyme disease if the tick was attached for more than 24 hours. Stay Informed with Real-Time Data To help residents stay up to date, Public Health Ontario maintains a live dashboard tracking tick-borne illnesses across the province. The Ontario Vector-Borne Disease Tool includes data on Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, Powassan virus, babesiosis, and West Nile virus. Local health units also offer resources and updates: Eastern Ontario Health Unit – Lyme and Tick‑Borne Diseases Ottawa Public Health – Lyme Disease Final Reminder Ticks are a natural part of the environment, especially in our increasingly warm and wooded regions. But with simple, proactive habits, you can protect yourself, your family, and your pets while still enjoying the outdoors. - 🗑️ Belleville Launches Weekly One-Day Collection Starting July
Belleville residents can expect a more convenient curbside experience starting the week of July 21, 2025. As part of a province-wide shift, the city’s recycling program is moving to a producer-funded model, and with that comes a few helpful changes to how and when materials are picked up. 🛻 One Day for All Curbside Collection If keeping track of garbage, recycling, and green bin pickup on different days has felt like a juggling act, we have some good news! Starting the week of July 21, everything will be collected on the same day each week. That means your Blue Box, green bin, and garbage can all go to the curb together. This change is part of Belleville’s transition to a new recycling system led by Circular Materials Ontario (CMO), with collections handled by E360 Solutions, a company now responsible for picking up recycling in the area. ✅ What You Need to Know Look up your new pickup day with the Collection Day Map Put out all items by 7:00 a.m. on that day Continue sorting your recycling the same way Use the hazardous waste depot as needed Call E360 Solutions for recycling concerns after July 21 📞 Who to Contact for Help Until July 21: Call the City’s Operations Centre at 613‑962‑7107 or use the online “Report an Issue” tool. Starting July 21: Recycling collection questions should be directed to E360 Solutions at 613‑392‑7107 or customerservice-eastont@e360s.ca. 🧪 Hazardous Waste Services Continue The Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 75 Wallbridge Crescent will continue operating as usual through the end of 2025, so residents can still drop off items like paint, batteries, and other materials not suited for curbside pickup. 🧾 Why These Changes Are Happening Under Ontario’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program, the companies that create packaging and paper products are now responsible for funding and managing recycling programs. This takes the cost off municipalities like Belleville and shifts it to the companies that produce waste in the first place. ♻️ Recycling Info Works Best When It’s Reused Know someone still chasing three trucks a week? - 🚨 SCAM ALERT: Quinte West Residents Targeted by Emergency Scheme
Quinte West, ON, July 17, 2025 Police are warning residents in the Quinte West area to be on high alert after several people were targeted in an ongoing “emergency scam” operation. According to OPP East Region, three residents recently fell victim to the scam, which involves a phone call from someone claiming to be a family member, often a grandchild in urgent need of money due to a supposed accident or arrest. In each case, the caller used panic and urgency to convince the victim to withdraw large sums of cash. One individual reportedly handed over thousands of dollars before realizing the story was a hoax. Seniors Are Often the Focus While anyone can be targeted, authorities note that older adults tend to be approached more frequently in these types of scams. Criminals often assume seniors may be more trusting and less likely to question the call. The OPP is reminding all residents, especially those with elderly family members, to be vigilant. What to Watch For 👀 Emergency scams often involve: A distressed phone call from someone pretending to be a loved one. A second caller pretending to be a police officer or lawyer. Urgent requests for bail or medical money, usually in cash. Instructions not to tell anyone, especially other family members. Protect Yourself and Loved Ones ⚠️ Police recommend the following steps: Verify the caller’s story. Hang up and call the family member or someone close to them. Don’t be pressured. Take time to think before acting. Never give cash to a stranger or courier based on a phone call. Report any suspicious contact to police immediately. Community Awareness is Key ✅ The OPP encourages families to talk openly about scams and keep an eye out for signs their loved ones may have been contacted. Sharing this information widely could prevent further victims. If you suspect you or someone you know has been targeted, contact Quinte West OPP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. 📢 Please share this alert, especially with friends, neighbours, and seniors who may not use social media. A quick conversation today could save someone from serious financial loss tomorrow. The current municipal program is ending, and with it, the old recycling schedule — all recycling collection will now take place on Wednesdays , for all zones. 🚛 Recycling Moves to Wednesdays Until now, Stirling-Rawdon operated on a two-day system: Zone 1 (primarily west of Stirling) was collected on Mondays Zone 2 (east side) was collected on Wednesdays That is now ending.
