Belleville Police have arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with a fraud case that began after a wallet was stolen from a vehicle earlier this week.
On October 1st, police received a report that an unknown individual had entered a vehicle overnight and stolen a wallet. The victim later discovered that their debit and credit cards had been used at several businesses throughout the night.
Officers attended one of the affected locations and reviewed security footage, which showed a man making purchases using the stolen cards. The suspect was identified by officers as someone known to police.
The following day, on October 2nd at approximately 1:08 p.m., police responded to a report of an unwanted person in the city’s west end. When officers arrived, they recognized the man as the suspect from the fraud investigation.
As a result, a 34-year-old Belleville man with no fixed address was arrested and charged with two counts of Fraud Under $5,000. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
This incident serves as a reminder to lock your vehicles and keep valued possessions with you at all times.
