Black Bear Spotted Along Highway 401 Near Cobourg

Northumberland County, ON — June 11, 2025

Motorists traveling along Highway 401 near Cobourg were met with an unusual sight today as a black bear was spotted wandering near the highway’s south shoulder close to the Theatre Road interchange, just east of the Burnham Road cutoff in Northumberland County.

The bear was seen around midday, drawing the attention of several drivers and prompting calls to local authorities. While there have been no reports of aggressive behaviour, the incident has raised safety concerns given the proximity to high-speed traffic and nearby residential areas.

Cobourg Police and officials from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) have confirmed the sighting and are actively monitoring the situation. They are advising the public to remain calm and avoid approaching the animal under any circumstances.

“This is not an uncommon occurrence in the early summer,” an MNR spokesperson stated. “Bears are often in search of food and may travel across rural and suburban areas, including along highways. The most important thing people can do is not to engage and to secure anything that may attract wildlife, such as garbage bins and bird feeders.”

Residents and commuters are being reminded of the Bear Wise reporting system. If the bear is simply passing through and not posing a threat, sightings should be reported to the Bear Wise hotline at 1‑866‑514‑2327, which operates 24/7 from April to November. However, if the bear shows signs of aggression—such as entering homes, schools, stalking people, or attacking pets—citizens should call 911 immediately.

The bear, described as medium-sized and non-aggressive, was last seen moving eastward along the treeline south of the highway. Authorities believe it may eventually return to the forested areas away from the road, but until then, they are asking drivers to be extra vigilant when traveling between the Burnham Road and Theatre Road exits.

This sighting serves as a reminder of the region's close connection to nature, and the responsibility that comes with sharing the land with native wildlife. As urban development continues to expand, human-bear encounters are expected to increase during active seasons.
