On April 19th, the Madoc Township Fire Department held their annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser. Delighting 668 visitors with multiple breakfast options including bacon, sausage, fluffy pancakes, eggs and toast with a glass of orange juice to drink.
While many families and friends lined up for breakfast while supporting the local fire department, the fire department’s mascot Sparky was making their presence. They were seen waving and interacting with everyone of all ages.
“This started back then just as ‘hey, we need to raise money for this specific thing’ and now we’ve just been doing it now for 44 years,” Brayden Jones stated, a resident in the Madoc Township resident and local fire fighter.
This pancake fundraiser initially started back in 1982 and has been a hit within local communities, bringing families together to support the volunteers and fire department that continue to keep us safe every day.
“It gets us to interact with the community, lets people come out and say ‘hi’ to us, we are your neighbours. You’ve seen us like a 100 thousand times out and about, but we’re here. We’re serving you breakfast today, and we could be cutting you out of your car tomorrow,” Jones stated, “it’s sort of a thank you as well. We can’t do what we do without the support of the citizens from the town.”
“It will be going towards a need typically, more so if there’s a piece of specialized equipment that needs to be replaced.” Jones shared. As well as equipment repairs and replacements, it can often help go towards other causes within the community, as well as helping the fire department further educate the community on fire safety.
The Madoc Township Fire Department helps out around the community within our schools with fire safety education, the annual Agriculture Fair in the fall for fire safety, and the annual Agricultural Fair’s Derby Demolition to create a safe environment for all drivers, staff members, and viewers on the sidelines.
“We’re trying to interact with the school, kids, and the community,” Scott Reid, the local Fire Chief, had stated. Reid and Jones have spent an entire day going to different classrooms to teach everyone about fire safety, believing that it is important to start teaching fire safety when kids are younger.
“Education has to be at the forefront of everything we do, especially now, with every synthetic possible being in every structure now, electric vehicles, and dealing with the schools, start educating them young on fire safety,” Jones shared, “Education is the key to fire prevention, 100 per cent, and the three biggest things are education, response and prevention.”
Alongside fire safety education, they have played a role in other parts within our communities, including the annual Toy Drive during the Christmas season, supporting the local Food For Learning Foundation and the Centre Hastings Support Network.
“In a lot of cases, we do donate some of the Firefighters Association funds to different causes; the hospice and the Food for Learning,” Jones shared, “Donations from the community that came through the Firefighters Association, we passed that along to the Centre Hastings Support Network for their toy drive.”
On July 17, 2025, the fire department also made an appearance for Tim Horton’s annual Camp Day at the Madoc location, showing kids of all ages one of their fire trucks while face painting and cotton candy treats were being offered.
The Madoc Township Fire Department is full of trained and dedicated volunteers that serve our communities by responding to emergency calls and providing fire and emergency services. The volunteers continue to work hard to save lives every day of the week, at any given moment.
With 668 delighted guests this morning, they are happy to be a part of our community to serve your breakfast with a side of safety and enthusiasm.
