December 28th, 2025 Update: The winter storm has just hit London and Kitchener and is on its way to the Quinte & Northumberland Regions. The weather data is showing it is expected to be in our area later this afternoon.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for freezing rain, with significant ice accumulation expected from Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning.
Hazardous travel conditions, possible power outages, and property damage are all possible as the storm moves through.
Areas Affected
Belleville - Quinte West - Eastern Northumberland County; Cobourg - Colborne - Western Northumberland County; Tamworth - Sydenham - South Frontenac; Stirling - Tweed - Madoc; Kingston - Odessa - Frontenac Islands; Napanee - Consecon; Lindsay - Southern Kawartha Lakes; Peterborough City - Lakefield - Southern Peterborough County
What’s Expected
Weather: Freezing rain
Ice Accretion: 5 to 15 millimetres
Timing: Late Sunday afternoon through Monday morning
Transition: Freezing rain may briefly change to rain Monday morning as temperatures climb just above the freezing mark
Why This Matters
Ice buildup of this magnitude can create dangerous conditions across the region. Even a few millimetres of ice can make roads, sidewalks, and parking lots extremely slippery. Heavier ice, especially closer to 15 mm, can add enough weight to bring down tree limbs and power lines.
Potential Impacts
Roads and sidewalks becoming icy and dangerous
Increased risk of vehicle crashes and slip-and-fall injuries
Power outages caused by ice-laden trees and power line
Damage to trees, buildings, and utility infrastructure
Public Safety Advice
Residents should prepare for difficult conditions Sunday evening through Monday morning by:
Avoiding unnecessary travel
Allowing extra time for essential trips
Using extreme caution when walking or driving
Charging devices and preparing for possible power disruptions
What Happens Next?
Weather officials will continue monitoring this system through Sunday night and into Monday morning.
Because temperatures will hover near the freezing mark, small changes could affect how long freezing rain lasts and how much ice builds up.
Additional alerts or upgrades may be issued overnight Sunday or early Monday if conditions worsen.
Please share this special weather alert with others so they may also stay safe and stay informed.
Residents should stay alert for new advisories as the storm progresses.
