Storm Details

What to Expect

Snowfall Totals: Accumulations ranging from 25 to 40 cm, with locally higher amounts possible over the Algonquin Highlands.

Peak Snowfall Rates: Intense snowfall at rates of 3 to 6 cm per hour, leading to rapid accumulation.

Visibility: Significantly reduced visibility due to heavy snow and blowing snow, creating whiteout conditions.

Timeline

Saturday, February 15: Snow is expected to begin this afternoon or evening, with initial accumulations of 5 to 10 cm by late evening.

Saturday Night: Snow may become lighter overnight.

Sunday, February 16: Conditions will rapidly deteriorate in the morning as heavier snow and blowing snow arrive. An additional 20 to 30 cm is likely, with the heaviest snowfall expected on Sunday.

Sunday Evening: Snow is anticipated to taper off, with conditions gradually improving.

Travel Impacts & Safety Precautions

Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous, particularly on Sunday, when heavy snowfall and blowing snow will reduce visibility to near zero. Motorists are strongly advised to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve. Rapidly accumulating snow can make roads treacherous.

Public Safety Canada recommends residents to:

  • Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essentials such as drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight.

  • Develop an Emergency Plan: Ensure all household members know what to do in case of an emergency.
