In the wake of a powerful ice storm that swept across Ontario, Hydro One has successfully restored electricity to more than 800,000 customers, demonstrating an incredible response effort in the face of extreme weather conditions. The storm, which struck on March 28, 2025, brought freezing rain and high winds that downed power lines and toppled trees across the province, leaving nearly one million customers in the dark (Today's Northumberland, 2025).
A Massive Restoration Effort
Hydro One crews, working tirelessly alongside contractors and mutual assistance teams from 18 other Ontario utilities, have made significant progress in restoring power to affected areas. Toronto Hydro has also contributed over 70 skilled trade workers and support staff to aid in the restoration efforts (Finance Yahoo, 2025).
Despite challenging conditions, the teams have restored power to over 80% of those initially affected.
“Our crews have been working around the clock to bring electricity back to homes and businesses as quickly and safely as possible,” said Chong Kiat Ng, Vice President of Distribution at Hydro One. “The scale of damage from this storm is comparable to the devastating ice storm of 1998, but we are committed to getting power back to every customer” (Today's Northumberland, 2025).
Areas Still Impacted
While the majority of affected residents have seen their lights come back on, approximately 192,000 customers remain without power as of April 2, 2025 (Reuters, 2025). The hardest-hit areas, including Orillia and Peterborough, are expected to have power fully restored by the end of the week. Crews are prioritizing critical infrastructure and high-impact areas before addressing smaller outages.
A Tribute to the Lineworkers
The extensive recovery initiative has showcased the determination and strength of Hydro One’s employees. Facing challenging weather, these individuals have been actively working in the field, fixing lines and restoring power continuously. Their unwavering dedication to ensuring Ontario remains energized reflects their expertise and resilience.
As the restoration process progresses, Hydro One encourages residents who are still experiencing outages to prioritize their safety and readiness. Information regarding restoration schedules and safety recommendations is available on Hydro One’s website and social media platforms.
This storm has been a reminder of the vital role hydro workers play in keeping communities connected. To the men and women working long hours to restore power — From all of us here in Ontario, thank you.
