  • Canada Post Workers Begin Nationwide Strike Amid Contract Disputes

On Friday, November 15, 2024, over 55,000 Canada Post employees commenced a nationwide strike after contract negotiations with their employer failed to reach an agreement. This labor action, led by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), highlights ongoing tensions over wage increases, cost-of-living adjustments, and safer working conditions. The strike, announced following a 72-hour notice earlier this week, is expected to disrupt mail and parcel deliveries across the country, particularly as the busy holiday season approaches. Canada Post confirmed delays in service, noting that mail and packages will not be delivered, and some post offices will remain closed during the strike. The corporation also emphasized that a prolonged disruption could impact its national network, requiring time to resume normal operations after the strike concludes. Federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon has appointed a special mediator to assist in the negotiations, underlining the government’s commitment to supporting a fair resolution. "Canadians need them to reach an agreement," MacKinnon said, urging both parties to work toward a deal. The CUPW claims that nearly a year of bargaining has yielded little progress. The union’s demands include wage increases in line with inflation, cost-of-living adjustments incorporated into base wages, and improved workplace safety measures. This strike is part of a larger wave of labor disputes across Canada, including recent actions at major ports and railway companies, many of which have prompted government intervention. As negotiations continue, the outcome of the Canada Post strike remains uncertain. • Canada Post Announces Potential Strike as Negotiations Continue

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has issued a 72-hour strike notice to Canada Post, signaling that negotiations between the two parties have yet to reach a satisfactory conclusion. The union, which represents thousands of Canada Post employees nationwide, has voiced concerns over a range of issues, including pay adjustments, improved benefits, and work conditions, especially for part-time and temporary staff. CUPW argues that these changes are necessary to ensure fair compensation and a safer, more equitable workplace. Since the beginning of their discussions almost a year ago, both the union and Canada Post have engaged in ongoing talks with limited breakthroughs. While both sides have stated that they are committed to a negotiated settlement, progress has reportedly stalled. CUPW President Jan Simpson noted that the union is aiming to avoid a full-scale strike, with the notice being intended to encourage movement at the bargaining table. The union insists that its members are seeking fair treatment, particularly concerning rising living costs and job security. Canada Post, however, has expressed its own concerns, emphasizing the challenges of maintaining service commitments and managing costs. In a recent statement, Canada Post underscored its dedication to continuing negotiations, even as it seeks to balance employee needs with operational realities. A Canada Post spokesperson added that the corporation is hopeful both parties will find a way to resolve their differences without disrupting services that Canadians rely on. The strike notice means that postal services could potentially be interrupted if an agreement is not reached within the next few days. However, CUPW has stated that it would prefer to agree without resorting to a strike, and has called on Canada Post to meet its requests for fair treatment in good faith. Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon has also intervened, urging both parties to reach a settlement independently. He stated that the government believes in the importance of maintaining collective bargaining without intervention, allowing workers and employers to address their needs through direct negotiations. In his comments, MacKinnon emphasized that both the government and the public are hopeful that an amicable solution will be reached, minimizing disruption for Canadians and avoiding potential delays in postal services across the country. As the 72-hour period approaches, stakeholders nationwide, including businesses and residents who depend on reliable postal services, are closely monitoring the situation. The outcome of these negotiations will likely significantly impact Canada Post’s operations, employee satisfaction, and public trust in the organization’s ability to serve Canadians efficiently and effectively. Small Town Productions will continue to update this evolving story, as both parties work towards a potential resolution. The accident occurred on Saturday, November 9, around 1:15 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway, just west of the County Road 40 interchange. According to a statement by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a minivan traveling westbound collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, including officers from the Quinte West OPP, members of the Quinte West Fire and Emergency Services, and the Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Service. Tragically, two passengers in the minivan, a 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman from Laval, Quebec, were pronounced dead at the scene. An eight-month-old infant, also a passenger in the minivan, succumbed to injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital. A four-year-old child was airlifted to a Toronto trauma center by Ornge Air Ambulance, where they are currently receiving treatment for serious injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured. Highway 401's westbound lanes were closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash. • Prince Edward Collegiate Institute Ends School-Hosted Prom Over Liability Concerns

Letter Issued: October 17, 2024 Picton, Ontario – Prince Edward Collegiate Institute (PECI) has announced it will no longer host a school-organized prom, citing increased liability concerns. The decision, shared in a letter from Principal Kim Myderwyk, comes after "careful review" and reflects the school's need to address growing challenges related to student safety and legal obligations. "Organizing and overseeing a prom presents unique challenges in ensuring student safety and well-being, many of which are beyond the direct scope of impact of the school," Myderwyk explained in the letter. These challenges, coupled with financial and legal risks, contributed to the decision to move away from school-hosted prom events. While the school will not host the event, Myderwyk emphasized that this change "does not preclude student-led prom committees, supported by parents, from hosting student-driven social celebrations." PECI will also continue to support graduation recognition and celebration events at the district and regional levels. "We understand that this is a change, but we believe it necessary in order to fulfill our obligations related to student safety and well-being," Myderwyk noted. The school has already communicated the decision to the graduating class and is encouraging families to discuss the changes at home. Families are encouraged to reach out to the school with any questions or concerns regarding the new prom policy. Myderwyk expressed appreciation for the support, saying, "Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this change." For more information or clarification, families can contact the PECI administration directly. • Campbellford and the Trent Hills Community Bid Farewell to YMCA Outdoor Pool

Photo Credit: Angel Bastien of Campbellford In Campbellford, a beloved community landmark is making way for progress as the YMCA outdoor pool faces demolition. For decades, this pool has been a summer staple for the town, offering a place for families to cool off, kids to learn to swim, and friends to gather. Now, as the machinery moves in, many in the community are reflecting on the memories made there and the gap its absence will leave. “I grew up swimming here,” recalls one Campbellford resident. “It’s hard to imagine summer without it. So many of us spent our childhoods here, making friends, playing games, and just enjoying being outside. It’ll definitely be missed.” The YMCA pool has long been more than just a swimming hole—it’s been a social hub, hosting everything from swim lessons and lifeguard training to birthday parties and community events. Its loss is deeply felt by many who have fond memories of the long summer days spent by the water. Yet, as the town says goodbye to the old, it is also looking forward to the new. The pool's closure is making way for the Sunny Life Centre, a modern facility set to open just south of Campbellford on Seymour Quarry Road. This state-of-the-art complex will feature an indoor pool, fitness centre, multi-purpose rooms, and year-round programming designed to cater to all ages and interests in the Trent Hills municipality. “There’s definitely some sadness about the pool coming down, but I’m really excited for the Sunny Life Centre,” says another local. “We’ll have so much more to do. It’s not just about summer anymore; we’ll have access to recreation all year.” The new Sunny Life Centre promises to breathe fresh life into the community, offering expanded facilities and programs that go beyond what the old pool could provide. While the outdoor pool was a seasonal attraction, the new centre will allow Campbellford residents to stay active and engaged throughout the year, regardless of the weather. “This new centre is going to be a huge benefit for the town,” says a community member. “The pool had its charm, but it was only available in the summer. The Sunny Life Centre will give us more options, whether it’s swimming in winter, fitness classes, or community events.” As the town prepares to say goodbye to a piece of its history, there’s a sense of hope and anticipation for what’s to come. The demolition of the YMCA outdoor pool may be bittersweet, but the future of Campbellford’s recreation is looking brighter than ever with the arrival of the Sunny Life Centre on Seymour Quarry Road. “It’s tough to let go of something that’s been part of our lives for so long,” reflects a long-time resident. “But change is part of life, and I think this new centre will give our community even more opportunities to connect and grow.” To keep updated with our latest news articles by having them sent straight to your email please visit www.smalltownproductions.org/signup We hope you have a great day! 😊 Link for Donations: We are solely independent with our news and our main source of funding is the amazing donations provided by readers like yourself to the link below. Daytime temperatures will be warmer than usual, reaching 19–22°C in urban areas like Toronto, Mississauga, and Hamilton. By the evening, however, temperatures will dip to around 7–11°C, bringing cooler air and the likelihood of rain showers, with some areas seeing up to a 60% chance of precipitation. Rain is expected to start in the afternoon, with potential thunderstorms developing in the evening, bringing short bursts of heavier rain and more intense wind gusts. While temperatures will be mild, the gusty winds and possible thunderstorms could create slick conditions for those out on the streets. Whether enjoying Halloween festivities or simply staying cozy indoors, families in Southern Ontario should plan for changing weather and keep an eye on local updates to stay prepared. • Site C Dam Begins Generating Power For BC’s Provincial Power Grid

BC Hydro reports that their first generating unit is currently active and generating electricity for the BC Provincial Power Grid. The next steps are to implement the next five generating units. The project is projected to be complete by fall 2025.  At long last, on Monday, October 28th, BC Hydro’s Site C Dam began generating power for BC’s Provincial Power Grid. BC Hydro reported on Monday that they activated the first of six generating units after a short testing and commissioning period. This first unit will provide 180 megawatts of electricity for the province. Once completed with all six generating units, the Site C Dam is estimated to generate a total of 1,100 megawatts of electricity. That equates to about 5,100 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, which adds 8% to British Columbia’s power supply. This generator, while seeming small, marks a substantial piece in an almost century-longstanding project. The Site C Dam was proposed nearly 70 years ago in the 1980s, but the start of the project was delayed until the liberal government picked up the project in 2010.  The project has also accumulated a large cost for the duration of its construction, costing the province nearly 16 billion dollars. After the massive amounts of time and money spent on the Site C Dam, BC Hydro reports that the project is nearing its completion and should be finished by fall 2025. Currently, the Site C Dam reservoir is 90% full, and water levels have risen 40 meters (131 feet) since late August. The next step for BC Hydro is to test and begin the commission work for the second generator, which the company reports is in progress.  The company continues to urge people away from the site for the next year due to unstable slopes and floating hazardous debris in the nearby water.  References:  https://globalnews.ca/news/10834721/site-c-dam-generating-power/   https://www.sitecproject.com/first-generating-unit   https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/site-c-begins-generating-power-1.7366174   Link for Donations: We are solely independent with our news and our only funding is your amazing donations to the link below.
