Canadian food safety authorities have expanded a major recall of pistachios and pistachio-containing products due to potential Salmonella contamination, now adding popular brands including Peace by Chocolate and NuttyHero.
The recall is part of an ongoing national food safety investigation that has linked pistachios to a growing number of Salmonella illnesses across Canada.
Possible Symptoms of Salmonella Infection
People who consume contaminated food may develop symptoms within 6 to 72 hours. Illness can range from mild to severe, particularly for young children, seniors, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms may include:
Fever
Chills
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Stomach cramps
Headache
Dehydration
In vulnerable individuals, Salmonella infections can become serious and, in rare cases, can be life-threatening, especially if the infection spreads beyond the digestive system or leads to severe dehydration or bloodstream infection. Anyone who develops symptoms after eating pistachios or pistachio-containing products should seek medical attention.
Products Added to the Recall
Peace by Chocolate
The following products have been recalled due to potential pistachio contamination:
Peace by Chocolate 24 Assorted Filled Chocolates (272 g)
Peace by Chocolate 15 Assorted Artisan Chocolates (170 g)
Peace by Chocolate 32 Assorted Artisan Chocolates (340 g)
Additional Peace by Chocolate assorted and promotional chocolate boxes
These products were sold across Canada and through online retailers.
NuttyHero
The recall also includes NuttyHero nut and seed butter products made with pistachios:
NuttyHero Maple Cinnamon Nut & Seed Butter (340 g)
NuttyHero Coconut Crunch Nut & Seed Butter (340 g)
NuttyHero Chocolate Bliss Nut & Seed Butter (340 g)
These products were distributed strictly in Ontario and were also available online for purchase.
Why These Products Were Recalled
The recalled products contain or may have been exposed to pistachios that are suspected to be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that causes foodborne illness.
The contamination was identified as part of a nationwide outbreak investigation involving multiple provinces.
Health officials have confirmed that the outbreak has resulted in numerous illnesses and hospitalizations. Because pistachios have a long shelf life, contaminated products purchased months ago may still be in homes.
Other Pistachio Products Also Recalled
This recall is part of a much broader pistachio-related investigation that began in 2025. A wide range of pistachio products have been affected, including:
Raw and roasted pistachios
Flavoured and coated pistachios
Pistachio chocolate bars
Middle Eastern desserts and pastries
Specialty pistachio snacks
Brands involved include Habibi, Al Mokhtar Food Centre, Dubai brand pistachio chocolate, Andalos pistachio pastries, along with other imported products.
Because new products may continue to be identified, consumers are urged to stay informed even if they have already checked their pantry.
What Consumers Should Do
Anyone who has pistachios or pistachio-containing foods at home should:
Stop using them immediately
Do not eat, serve, or sell them
Throw them away or return them to the store
Wash hands, containers, and surfaces that may have touched the food
If you are unsure whether a product is affected, do not take the risk, do not consume it.
