Flood Warning Continues for Trent River: Conditions Stable but Risk Remains in Low-Lying Areas

Updated: Apr 21

April 17, 2025 – Trent Hills, Ontario – Lower Trent Conservation (LTC) is maintaining its Flood Warning for the Trent River, advising residents and property owners in vulnerable areas to remain alert as elevated water levels continue. This warning, originally issued earlier this season, remains in place due to the steady flow of water through the Trent-Severn Waterway and localized flooding in flood-prone zones.

The warning affects communities along the Trent River, including Trent Hills, Quinte West, Brighton, Stirling-Rawdon, and Alnwick/Haldimand.

Current Situation

The water level rise is largely attributed to seasonal runoff combined with rainfall and dam operations upstream. While flooding has been reported in some low-lying areas and near riverbanks, the situation remains stable in many other parts of the watershed.

According to LTC, no sudden or extreme changes are anticipated at this time, but caution is still warranted. The conservation authority and Parks Canada continue to monitor water flows and make operational adjustments to manage the risk downstream.

Possible Outcomes

While some residents may experience nuisance flooding—such as water in backyards, ditches, or near docks—others may see minimal or no impact, depending on topography and proximity to the river. However, the potential for localized damage remains, especially if additional rain or inflows occur unexpectedly.

The continuation of the warning is part of a proactive strategy to keep residents informed and prepared during a period when river systems are naturally under pressure.

Safety and Preparedness

Residents are encouraged to take the following steps:

Avoid riverbanks and fast-moving water, especially with children and pets.

Ensure sump pumps are functional, and move valuable items to higher ground if you're in a low-lying area.

Watch for updates through the LTC website, local news, and municipal channels.

Delay recreational activities on the water until conditions improve.
