Residents of Trent Hills and Havelock should expect a significant detour beginning next week as Northumberland County prepares to fully close the Trent River Bridge on County Road 30 for rehabilitation work.

The closure is scheduled to begin Tuesday, August 18th and is expected to remain in place through October.

The bridge is located approximately 300 metres south of County Road 42 and serves as an important north-south connection across the Trent River for residents, businesses and visitors travelling between Campbellford and the southern portion of County Road 30.

Full Closure Planned

Northumberland County says the bridge will be completely closed to traffic while rehabilitation work is underway.

According to the County, completing the project under a full closure will allow crews to carry out the necessary repairs more safely and efficiently while reducing the overall length of the construction period.

Signed detour routes will be established for both local vehicles and heavy trucks. Each detour is expected to add approximately 20 minutes to travel times.

Additional signage will also be installed in Campbellford and Havelock to warn motorists of the closure and direct traffic to alternative routes for accessing County Road 30 south and Highway 7.

Repairs Planned for the Bridge

The rehabilitation project follows engineering assessments that identified deterioration involving the bridge's expansion joints as well as its approach and sleeper slabs.

Work planned as part of the project includes:

  • Removal and reconstruction of the approach slabs, sleeper slabs and expansion joints

  • Localized concrete removal and patch repairs to sidewalks and curbs

  • Patching and waterproofing of the existing concrete bridge deck

  • Paving around the bridge's approach slabs

The Northumberland County Director of Public Works Denise Marshall acknowledged that the closure will cause a significant disruption for people who regularly use the route, but said completing the rehabilitation under a full closure will allow the contractor to finish the work more efficiently and safely.

Motorists travelling through the area are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional time for their trips and follow all posted construction and detour signage.

Updates on the project will be provided by Northumberland County as work progresses.
