Investigations are underway following two tragic incidents on East Lake that claimed the life of one man and left another missing over the weekend.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the 51 year old man from Toronto during this difficult time. We remain hopeful for the safe return of the missing person who has not been found yet. Please avoid speculation or off-topic comments out of respect. Thank you.
The first incident occurred late Saturday night, shortly after 11:00 p.m., when Prince Edward County OPP were called to a resort on County Road 18 for a reported drowning. Emergency crews, including Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue, Hastings-Quinte Paramedics, and bystanders, attempted to perform life-saving measures when OPP officers arrived.
The individual was transported to the closest hospital but was later pronounced deceased. Police have identified the victim as a 51-year-old man from the Toronto area.
Less than 24 hours later, on Sunday just before 6:00 p.m., emergency services were again called, this time to County Road 11, after a group in two canoes on East Lake decided to go swimming and were unable to get back into the canoes. One person managed to swim to shore, while a nearby bystander used his own boat to rescue two others from the water.
Tragically, one individual remains missing. Police have not released the missing person's identity at this time.
The OPP’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit is at East Lake today, continuing search efforts.
Police have not confirmed whether the incidents are related, but investigations into both events remain ongoing.
