Wind Warning and Snow Squalls Shake Up Today

The door barely cracks open, and the wind is already pushing back. That sharp, restless rush in the air says it all. Today is going to be a blustery one, and it’s only getting started. The wind we are seeing was initially expected last night.

A new Wind Warning was put in effect as of 5:41 AM today, with strong southwesterly winds developing this morning as a powerful cold front sweeps through.

By this afternoon, the winds turn westerly, and that’s when the strongest gusts are expected to hit.

How Strong Will It Get?

Wind gusts today are forecast to reach:

  • 80 to 90 km/h across much of the region

  • Up to 100 km/h near Lake Ontario

The strongest winds are expected this afternoon, especially along the shoreline, before easing this evening.

Snow Squalls in The Mix

Snow squalls are already active in parts of Northumberland County, and more could develop or sweep into nearby areas through the afternoon.

These fast-moving bands of snow can bring brief bursts of heavy snowfall, blowing snow, and sudden drops in visibility, especially with winds this strong.

Conditions can go from calm to chaotic in minutes when a squall rolls through.

What To Expect

Strong winds like this can lead to:

  • Localized power outages

  • Tree branches and fences being damaged

  • Light structures and loose outdoor items being blown around

  • Difficult travel, especially during snow squalls and blowing snow

Anything loose outside should be secured.

How The Day Unfolds

Morning: Southwesterly winds increase as the cold front moves through

Afternoon: Winds turn westerly and strengthen, with peak gusts near Lake Ontario and snow squalls possible

Evening: Winds gradually ease, but blustery winter conditions continue

The wind already has that hollow roar to it, slipping between buildings, rattling signs, and pushing clouds across the sky.

Add in the chance of sudden snow squalls, and today is shaping up to be one of those classic winter days where the weather refuses to sit still. 🌬️❄️
