PRESS RELEASE Belleville, ON — The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps QUINTE invites the community to celebrate a significant milestone: on Saturday June 7th, 2025 the RCSCC will be celebrating 50 years of women/girls officially participating in the Cadet programs. Prior to 1975, girls interested in maritime service often participated through the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS) and the Wrenettes, which provided valuable training and support during and after World War II. The formal inclusion of girls into the Sea Cadet program in 1975 marked a pivotal moment, opening the doors for generations of young women to develop leadership, seamanship, and citizenship skills in an organized youth environment. This milestone is especially meaningful as RCSCC QUINTE proudly has its first ever Female Commanding Officer, Lieutenant (N) Lisa Bresett, who was herself a cadet with RCSCC QUINTE and will be helping lead and celebrate this achievement. To honour this legacy, the Corps is hosting an Open House and Evening Mingle this Saturday, June 7th. The free Open House runs from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at 16 South Front Street. Visitors of all ages are welcome to tour the facility, meet current cadets and staff, and learn about the many opportunities offered by the Sea Cadet program. Girls and boys in the program receive hands-on training in seamanship, navigation, first aid, leadership, community service, and physical fitness — preparing them for future careers and responsible citizenship. Alumni are especially encouraged to attend, reconnect, and share memories. Roadwork season is officially underway in Quinte West, with major infrastructure improvements beginning across the municipality. Among the most immediate changes, Smithfield residents and commuters should prepare for temporary lane closures and paving activity on the Smithfield Bridge and several surrounding roads. Smithfield Bridge Work: June 3–6 Starting Tuesday, June 3, the Smithfield Bridge on Highway 2 (between Bolton Road and Short Street) will be reduced to a single lane due to a microsurfacing project. This process is designed to extend the life of the bridge by applying a protective layer to the surface — a blend of asphalt, aggregate, and other materials that prevent deterioration from water and traffic. Work is expected to wrap up by Friday, June 6, weather permitting. During this time, traffic will be managed with temporary signals or flag personnel, and delays should be expected. Ongoing Paving Projects in Quinte West In addition to the bridge work, asphalt paving has already begun on several nearby roads, including: Power Street – from Lock Road to Highway 33 Old Wooler Road – from County Road 5 to Stacey Road These projects include improvements to sidewalks, curbs, and gutters where applicable, and are part of the City of Quinte West’s broader plan to improve road safety and usability through the summer and fall. As of June 2, 2025, Ontario is facing an active wildfire season, with 26 confirmed forest fires recorded so far this year, according to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. These fires have collectively burned approximately 20 hectares of forest, with most activity concentrated in the province’s remote northern regions. Among the notable fires, Cochrane 2 (located northwest of Attawapiskat) is now classified as “under control.” However, Cochrane 3, burning roughly 48 kilometers west of the same community, remains active and continues to be closely monitored by firefighting crews. To reduce the risk of additional outbreaks, the province has implemented two Restricted Fire Zones (RFZs). RFZ 2025-001, declared on May 16, covers significant parts of the Northwest Region (zones 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8). A second RFZ (2025-002) was added on May 30 and includes zones 4, 9, 10, and 11. Within these restricted zones, all open-air burning, including campfires, is banned, and all burning permits have been temporarily suspended. While Ontario’s wildfire numbers remain below the 10-year average, the risk remains fluid and depends heavily on weather conditions, especially in the drier regions of the north. Wildfires continue to be a national concern, with over 1,377 fires recorded across Canada in 2025 throughout the different provinces, burning a staggering 1.58 million hectares of land so far. Air Quality Warning With wildfires burning across northern Ontario and elsewhere in Canada, residents are being cautioned about the possibility of deteriorating air quality. Smoke from wildfires can travel hundreds of kilometers and pose serious health risks — particularly to children, seniors, and individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD. Environment Canada has issued special air quality statements in some affected areas, warning of elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air. People are advised to limit outdoor activities when smoke is visible and to check local air quality indices frequently. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and urge the public to follow updates and adhere to all fire bans and advisories. Quinte West, ON – A local business is reeling after a break-in and suspected arson late Thursday night, prompting an active investigation by multiple law enforcement and fire agencies. Shortly before 10:30 p.m. on May 29th, officers with the Quinte West Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Quinte West Fire Department responded to an emergency call at a restaurant located on Old Highway 2, just east of Burns Avenue. According to the initial investigation, two individuals forced entry into the business. Moments after the break-in, a fire erupted inside the premises. The suspects, both dressed in black clothing and wearing masks, are believed to be between 5’6” and 5’8” (168–173 cm) in height. They fled the scene in a grey Nissan, which investigators are currently working to identify. The Quinte West OPP Crime Unit, along with the Office of the Fire Marshal and the OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit, is actively investigating the incident. May 28, 2025 – Napanee, ON UPDATE: She has been located The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing woman last believed to be in the Napanee area on May 19, 2025. Hailey, 29, was reported missing and has not been heard from since. She is described as 5’4” (164 cm) with a medium build and long brown hair. Authorities believe she may be driving a grey 2019 Subaru Outback bearing the license plate CKKJ051 The OPP has released a missing person bulletin, including a photo of Hailey and a similar vehicle, in the hope that someone may have seen her or her vehicle in the past week.
