The exercise is both a preparedness initiative for the police force and a reassurance to residents: although they may notice an elevated presence of officers, there is no threat to public safety. What Residents Should Expect Increased visibility of police vehicles and personnel across Cobourg, as officers engage in scenario-based training. Mock scenarios involving radios, flashlights, and tactical drills, but **no real-world threat.** Training scheduled for June 18, with activities primarily during daytime hours. Occurring just two days before the launch of CPS’s “Safer Streets Cobourg” program — aimed at addressing open‑air drug use, trespassing, and heightened community visibility — this training reaffirms the service’s focus on safety and responsiveness . What to Do if You Notice Activity Stay calm: Any training observed will be planned, with no immediate risk. Proceed as usual: Community events, shopping, or other daily activities can continue without disruption. Seek information: Direct questions to the Cobourg Police Service via their official channels, or visit their website for updates. • Police Impersonation Investigation Underway in Kawartha Lakes

Kawartha Lakes, ON — June 13, 2025 — The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a troubling case of police impersonation that occurred on Friday evening along Highway 35 and County Road 36 in the City of Kawartha Lakes. According to OPP reports, a male suspect operating a white SUV resembling a police cruiser was observed attempting to pull over drivers while using red flashing lights — a tactic often used to imitate real law enforcement vehicles. The SUV was not a marked police vehicle, but witnesses noted it had features and behavior that could easily confuse unsuspecting drivers. The incident unfolded on June 13 and prompted an immediate response from the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP Detachment, who are now seeking public assistance in identifying the individual responsible. 👮 What We Know So Far: Time & Location: Incident occurred the evening of Friday, June 13 along Highway 35 and County Road 36. Suspect Vehicle: Described as a white SUV equipped with red flashing lights, similar in appearance to an unmarked police vehicle. Suspect Actions: Attempted to pull over vehicles while impersonating an officer. No suspect has been arrested at this time, and the OPP have not released further identifying details. However, the investigation remains active, and officers are asking anyone with dashcam footage, witness accounts, or any information to contact the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. 🛡️ OPP Public Safety Message In response to the incident, the Kawartha Lake OPP released a public statement emphasizing that drivers have the right to request identification from any officer during a stop. “If you ever feel unsure about the legitimacy of a traffic stop, it’s okay to ask the officer for their badge number and name. You also have the right to call 911 to verify the officer’s identity,” the statement reads. 🚨 Tips for Staying Safe During a Traffic Stop Ask to See ID: All legitimate OPP officers carry provincial-issued photo ID and a badge. Verify by Phone: If in doubt, call 911 to confirm you’re being stopped by a real officer. Stay in Your Vehicle: Do not exit until you are confident in the legitimacy of the stop. Take Note: Record the vehicle’s description, license plate, and any identifying features. 📢 Share to Protect Others This incident is a stark reminder that not every flashing light is a sign of safety.
