- Black Bear Spotted Along Highway 401 Near Cobourg
Northumberland County, ON — June 11, 2025 Motorists traveling along Highway 401 near Cobourg were met with an unusual sight today as a black bear was spotted wandering near the highway’s south shoulder close to the Theatre Road interchange, just east of the Burnham Road cutoff in Northumberland County. The bear was seen around midday, drawing the attention of several drivers and prompting calls to local authorities. While there have been no reports of aggressive behaviour, the incident has raised safety concerns given the proximity to high-speed traffic and nearby residential areas. Cobourg Police and officials from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) have confirmed the sighting and are actively monitoring the situation. They are advising the public to remain calm and avoid approaching the animal under any circumstances. “This is not an uncommon occurrence in the early summer,” an MNR spokesperson stated. “Bears are often in search of food and may travel across rural and suburban areas, including along highways. The most important thing people can do is not to engage and to secure anything that may attract wildlife, such as garbage bins and bird feeders.” Residents and commuters are being reminded of the Bear Wise reporting system. If the bear is simply passing through and not posing a threat, sightings should be reported to the Bear Wise hotline at 1‑866‑514‑2327, which operates 24/7 from April to November. However, if the bear shows signs of aggression—such as entering homes, schools, stalking people, or attacking pets—citizens should call 911 immediately. The bear, described as medium-sized and non-aggressive, was last seen moving eastward along the treeline south of the highway. Authorities believe it may eventually return to the forested areas away from the road, but until then, they are asking drivers to be extra vigilant when traveling between the Burnham Road and Theatre Road exits. This sighting serves as a reminder of the region's close connection to nature, and the responsibility that comes with sharing the land with native wildlife. As urban development continues to expand, human-bear encounters are expected to increase during active seasons. For now, local officials are keeping a close watch and encouraging the public to stay informed and act responsibly. If you’re traveling in the area, stay alert, avoid distractions, and report any further sightings to the proper authorities. Prior to 1975, girls interested in maritime service often participated through the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS) and the Wrenettes, which provided valuable training and support during and after World War II. The formal inclusion of girls into the Sea Cadet program in 1975 marked a pivotal moment, opening the doors for generations of young women to develop leadership, seamanship, and citizenship skills in an organized youth environment. Visitors of all ages are welcome to tour the facility, meet current cadets and staff, and learn about the many opportunities offered by the Sea Cadet program. Alumni are especially encouraged to attend, reconnect, and share memories. Following the Open House, an Evening Mingle will take place from 6:00 PM to midnight at The Belleville Club, 210 Pinnacle Street. Tickets are $50 and include food, tea, and coffee, with a cash bar available. - Quinte West: Smithfield Bridge Lane Closures and Road Paving Projects Begin June 3
Roadwork season is officially underway in Quinte West, with major infrastructure improvements beginning across the municipality. Among the most immediate changes, Smithfield residents and commuters should prepare for temporary lane closures and paving activity on the Smithfield Bridge and several surrounding roads. Smithfield Bridge Work: June 3–6 Starting Tuesday, June 3, the Smithfield Bridge on Highway 2 (between Bolton Road and Short Street) will be reduced to a single lane due to a microsurfacing project. This process is designed to extend the life of the bridge by applying a protective layer to the surface — a blend of asphalt, aggregate, and other materials that prevent deterioration from water and traffic. Work is expected to wrap up by Friday, June 6, weather permitting. During this time, traffic will be managed with temporary signals or flag personnel, and delays should be expected. Ongoing Paving Projects in Quinte West In addition to the bridge work, asphalt paving has already begun on several nearby roads, including: Power Street – from Lock Road to Highway 33 Old Wooler Road – from County Road 5 to Stacey Road These projects include improvements to sidewalks, curbs, and gutters where applicable, and are part of the City of Quinte West’s broader plan to improve road safety and usability through the summer and fall. Looking Ahead: More Projects and Bike Lane Additions Coming in July, additional paving and active transportation enhancements are scheduled for: Frankford Road – from Wallbridge to Scotts Church Road Wallbridge-Loyalist Road – from Vermilyea Road to Frankford Road Foxboro-Stirling Road – from Marsh Hill Road to Wallbridge-Loyalist Road These routes will also see new bike lanes, promoting safer options for cyclists and multi-modal commuters. Rural Surface Treatments Underway Nearly 30 rural roads across Quinte West are receiving surface treatments as part of the municipality’s annual maintenance program, which aims to extend road life and improve driving conditions. Let’s Keep Each Other Informed Knowing what roads are closed — and when — helps all of us get where we’re going safely and on time. If you found this information helpful, consider sharing it with friends, neighbors, or in your community Facebook group. By keeping each other in the loop, we help reduce frustration, avoid delays, and make our small towns stronger, more connected places to live. - Wildfires Persist Across Ontario: Air Quality Concerns Rise
As of June 2, 2025, Ontario is facing an active wildfire season, with 26 confirmed forest fires recorded so far this year, according to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. These fires have collectively burned approximately 20 hectares of forest, with most activity concentrated in the province’s remote northern regions. Among the notable fires, Cochrane 2 (located northwest of Attawapiskat) is now classified as “under control.” However, Cochrane 3, burning roughly 48 kilometers west of the same community, remains active and continues to be closely monitored by firefighting crews. To reduce the risk of additional outbreaks, the province has implemented two Restricted Fire Zones (RFZs). RFZ 2025-001, declared on May 16, covers significant parts of the Northwest Region (zones 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8). A second RFZ (2025-002) was added on May 30 and includes zones 4, 9, 10, and 11. Within these restricted zones, all open-air burning, including campfires, is banned, and all burning permits have been temporarily suspended. While Ontario’s wildfire numbers remain below the 10-year average, the risk remains fluid and depends heavily on weather conditions, especially in the drier regions of the north. Wildfires continue to be a national concern, with over 1,377 fires recorded across Canada in 2025 throughout the different provinces, burning a staggering 1.58 million hectares of land so far. Air Quality Warning With wildfires burning across northern Ontario and elsewhere in Canada, residents are being cautioned about the possibility of deteriorating air quality. Smoke from wildfires can travel hundreds of kilometers and pose serious health risks — particularly to children, seniors, and individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD. Environment Canada has issued special air quality statements in some affected areas, warning of elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air. People are advised to limit outdoor activities when smoke is visible and to check local air quality indices frequently. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and urge the public to follow updates and adhere to all fire bans and advisories. Staying informed and prepared is key to staying safe during Ontario’s wildfire season. Stay Informed. Stay Safe. As wildfire conditions continue to evolve across Ontario, it's more important than ever to stay connected and informed. Keep track of local advisories, evacuation alerts, and air quality warnings through trusted sources like Ontario’s wildfire information website, municipal updates, and Environment Canada. We also encourage residents to support one another— share updates, offer assistance where safe to do so, and help spread awareness within your communities. Whether it's a text, a phone call, or a post online, keeping your neighbours informed can make a real difference in safety and preparedness. Together, we are stronger.
