  • Cobourg Police Issue Warning About Speed Camera Text Scam

The Cobourg Police Service is alerting residents about a fraudulent text message scam circulating in the community. A concerned resident recently reported receiving a suspicious text claiming to be from Service Ontario, demanding immediate payment for a supposed speed camera fine. Authorities are stressing that this is a scam. Service Ontario does not issue fines through text messages; all official notices, including those for automated speed cameras, are sent exclusively by mail via Canada Post. Red Flags to Watch For: The text may originate from a foreign phone number with an unfamiliar area code. It often uses incorrect terms such as “DMV” or refers to non-existent laws. Messages may include threatening language, urging recipients to pay immediately to avoid penalties. Scam texts typically contain a suspicious link directing you to a fraudulent website. What You Should Do: ❌ Do not click on any links. 🚫 Do not reply to the message. 📵 Block the sender. 📞 Report the scam to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. Police remind residents that government agencies will never use text messages to demand payment for fines. Sharing this information can help protect friends, family, and neighbours from falling victim to these scams. By keeping each other informed, our community can stay one step ahead of these scammers. • Ontario Families Advised of School Bus Service Disruptions Due to Driver Shortages

Notice Issued by: Southwestern Ontario Student Transportation Services The Southwestern Ontario Student Transportation Services (STS) has issued a notice advising families to prepare for possible school bus service disruptions, as Ontario continues to face a province-wide bus driver shortage. According to STS, the reality of the shortage means route cancellations will be unavoidable in some cases. Parents are being asked to make alternate arrangements when necessary and to check updates regularly. Despite the challenges, some drivers have expressed willingness to help. For example, drivers contracted under Hamilton bus lines have indicated they would be prepared to step in to cover certain routes if asked. Parents and community members have voiced frustration that these offers of support have not yet been fully acted upon. Families are strongly encouraged to check route updates daily, both in the morning and afternoon, by visiting mybigyellowbus.ca or using the BusPlanner Delays app for the latest delay and cancellation information. STS has stated they will continue to work to minimize disruptions as much as possible, but families should remain prepared for sudden changes as the shortage continues to affect services. • Rally Planned to Protect Jobs and the Future of Loyalist College

(Belleville, ON) | Small Town News | A Division of Small Town Productions | The Loyalist College community is preparing to come together in a show of support for public education and local jobs. On Wednesday, September 3 at 12:00 p.m. , students, staff, and area residents will gather in the P8 parking lot at Loyalist College, just off Wallbridge Loyalist Road , to rally against cuts that have raised deep concerns about the college’s future. The event, part of the Save Our Colleges  campaign, follows recent financial decisions that have left management expected to outnumber full-time instructors in the near future. For many, these changes represent more than just restructuring; they put both opportunities for students and the stability of good local jobs at risk. Loyalist has long been an anchor in the region, offering a place for students to pursue their education close to home while also providing steady employment for faculty and staff. The college supports not only the dreams of learners but also the livelihoods of workers whose roles are essential to the community. Organizers stress that these connections between education and employment are worth protecting. “ The future of public, accessible education in our backyard is at risk, ” the campaign notice reads. “ We can still reverse course, join us in standing up for a different future! ” The rally aims to highlight how decisions made today will impact not only classrooms but also the local economy. Fewer instructors mean fewer jobs, fewer opportunities for students, and fewer skilled graduates to meet the needs of employers in the area. At its core, the gathering is about defending hope, opportunity, and livelihoods. By standing together, the Loyalist community is sending a clear message: education and jobs go hand in hand, and both are worth fighting for. Anyone who cannot make the rally is encouraged to voice their concerns via telephone to Loyalist College administration in a professional manner. Please spread the word far and wide. We hope to see some great numbers on Wednesday. Let's remind Loyalist who they need: students and talented professors.
